Plant life and flowers on Glassy Mountain

   Minimize

Here is a collection of pictures showing the variety of plants and flowers that grow on Glassy Mountain in Greenville, SC.

This white flower is called Bloodroot and is one of the first Spring flowers. The flowers pole through first and then the petals quickly fall off. Large leaves then sprout out and remain for quite a while.

This picture of mountain laurel is from our yard. They are my favorite of all the flowering shrubs.

These are the first rhododendron to bloom with a white to slightly pink blossom. The leaves on these plants are small and look very similar to the mountain laurel. The bark is gray and does not have the reddish tint that mountain laurel often does.

This is a Dwarf Iris. They shoot up in clusters, but only seem to flower when they get enough sunlight.

This Fire Pink is a striking red flower. The petals drop off and leave a very sticky seed pod.

This is a Carolina Silverbell tree that has these bell shaped flowers during early Spring.

These Trillium have three leaves and are one of the first flowers to push through in early Spring. They are often seen with the Bloodroot. They have a pleasant smell and often fill a complete hillside under the trees. They come up before any leaves are on the trees.

Here are some wild violets. There are a number of different varieties of violets in the area.
